The 7 Rules to follow when Buying Your Domain Name
- Think of something that is easy to pronounce, spell and remember.
- If you are in a position to do so and you are planning to grow big then try to buy all plural and hyphenated versions of your domain name in case someone misspells, so they still end up in your site. This also will ensure that your competition isn’t going to buy those versions and basically steal business right in front of your eyes.
- Try to put key words in your domain name. However, make sure they are related to what your site is about.
- Always go for the .com. If you like something and it is taken start looking for something else but always get the .com. That’s a rule all internet marketing gurus are implementing. Typing the .com at the end of an address has become so automatic and unconscious that is certain you lose business if your competitor owns the .com and you go for the .net. You can of course buy the rest like .net or .biz but only if you already have the .com. The reason to buy the .net and .biz is related to Rule number 2.
- Don’t buy domain names with numbers unless you already own the other version when it is spelled out. For example if you have the number “5” in your domain make sure you also have the one that is spelled out “five”.
- Choose a generic name so that you gain some flexibility. Choosing a domain with your company name in it is not a good idea. It’s not a good idea especially if you are going to be following the new attraction based marketing model. Sending an e-mail to a prospect that you are just starting to build a relationship with whom maybe with a different company at this time from didi@mycompanyname.com will scare them away. Or if you send a website to your prospect that is www.yourcompany.com they most likely would not want to click on it. You also don’t want to have content there that’s related to your company, but that’s another topic.

Don’t be in a rush; take your time in finding the best domain name that’s available. Even if it took you a few days to come with a good idea that’s much better and preferable than being in a hurry and spending your money on something that is not good enough.
You should think of it as if you are choosing a name for your own company, you wouldn’t want just any name. People even hire specialist to help them in the process of choosing a company name. So that’s how important it is to also take your time in brainstorming and coming up with a successful domain name.
